I realize many of you have heard various versions of the Starfish Story; however, it is always a great reminder of the confidence we must possess to lead ourselves and others.
This story also reminds me of how important it is for us to grow our confidence so we effectively handle challenges presented by others and ourselves. Challenges often exist to deliver us a message. Rather than getting wrapped up in the drama associated with challenges, we need to look for and consider the opportunities. It may be time for us to consider doing something different. We must continually grow our confidence so we personally innovate and share our unique talents with the world.
After researching the Starfish Story, I found that the original source of this story is from Loren Eiseley’s publication, The Star Thrower. Eiseley and I have a great deal in common. We are both Nebraska natives and graduates of the University of Nebraska.

The Starfish Story
One day an old man was walking along a beach littered with thousands of starfish. A storm beached the starfish, and they were dying. The man noticed a young girl picking starfish up and throwing them into the ocean. He approached the young girl and asked, “What are you doing?”
The young girl replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. If I don’t throw them back, they will die.”
“Little girl,” the old man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
After listening politely, the young girl bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.
She then looked up at the old man and smiled at him with great confidence and said,
“I made a difference to that one!”
