Untame Your Future

Wild Innovation is busy! This is an exciting time in the history (and future) of our business. Like many businesses, COVID presented us with a number of challenges. Now, we are seeing a lot of interest from organizations and individuals who want to take charge of their futures.

Workshops and presentations are filling up fast! I am excited about returning to the the Nebraska Water Leaders Academy next week to lead a workshop on strategic foresight and leadership. In two weeks, I am presenting to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is doing some amazing work with strategic foresight and invited me to discuss strategic foresight as a core leadership competency. I am both grateful and thrilled to be part of their strategic foresight efforts! We are also working with several clients who are shaping the future of industries like industrial hemp and food production (more on those engagements later).

If you feel uncertain about the future, you are not alone. There is a lot of uncertainty in the world. Clients come to us because they want to create a clear vision and take the right actions to achieve their desired futures. Futures Coaching is designed to help clients untame their futures while creating more certainty. How? Wild Innovation combines strategic foresight with neuroscience and coaching. We use this unique approach to help individuals and organizations move forward with the direction and energy they need to achieve their desired futures.

An Aging Nation

There is opportunity in the Longevity Economy. By 2035, adults will outnumber children for the first time in history. The economic contributions of this age group is set to balloon to $28.2 trillion by 2050. Further, the wants and needs of consumers and producers in this age group are definitely evolving.

What is the Longevity Economy?

According to the AARP, the Longevity Economy describes the economic contributions of Americans over the age of 50. These contributions include employment, volunteering, business ownership, family care, etc.

As the nation continues to recover from the pandemic, older Americans must must be included in the solutions. Venture Capitalists are investing in this space, and Americans are redefining what it means to age. Opportunities will continue to grow in the Longevity Economy.

What opportunities do you think exist in the Longevity Economy?

Looking forward to hearing your WILD ideas! Please share them below!!

Untame Your Year: Future Story 2022

Did you set some goals or intentions for 2022? Or, maybe you chose a word or phrase to help you focus this year. Maybe you didn’t do any of it because you feel stuck or just didn’t feel like it.  Remember, being an adult doesn’t need to be boring — and neither does this process!

Our beliefs are powerful, and the life story that plays over and over in our heads dictates our actions. So, writing your ideal story is a great way to change your beliefs and behaviors while also uncovering emotions that you might not know you had. For example, when I wrote my Future Story for 2022 – a lot came up about my feelings around COVID. It was enlightening, and I realized that I needed to let my negativity about it go so I could use that energy for more productive purposes.  I also need to start having more fun again.  I am done with the pillows, signs, and t-shirts that state, “stay home” or “peace, love, joy.”  I am all for being smart about COVID, but I am also ready for some fun and excitement.  So, enjoy this.  Be bold about what you want and start getting excited about life again.  It’s time to untame your future!

Coaching Tip: This futures coaching exercise is always a big hit with teams and groups because they can have some fun with it. I find that people bond when they can let loose and enjoy some time together while setting strategic directions for more prosperous futures.  You can do it together in a physical location or in an online setting.  Just make sure to incorporate some fun elements into the process.

How to Create a Futures Capsule: A FREE Mini-Course!

It’s Time to Map Out Your Mini-Moonshots

A coaching client I worked with this morning was shocked at the fact that it is already January 7, 2022. The year will go by quickly for many of us – as will the next few!

Studies show that only about 15% of Americans have a plan for their lives. It’s time to change that!

Why? Because we create our future in the present moment through our beliefs, behaviors, and actions. Having a plan helps guide the thoughts that create our actions in the present while building the future.

Have you ever created a time capsule so you can look at it later and remember the past?  A Futures Capsule is designed to do the reverse – it helps us plan for the future.

Mapping out our desired Mini-Moonshots – our milestones, goals, and adventures – creates momentum through the process of dreaming, designing, and doing.

Wild Innovation is offering a free mini-course to help people create a Futures Capsule so they can intentionally design both the present and future.

This free course will help people take a look at the next four years of their lives and make a futures plan to 2025 – using the mini-moonshots – for each year. Enjoy the process, and let us know if you have any questions!

Your Future Story 2021

As a student of strategic foresight, you learn that there are multiple futures.  Typically, you learn about the preferable, probable, plausible and possible futures; however, I noticed that something was missing – the Purposeful Future.

A Purposeful Future is the path we choose to pursue with conscious intent because it is both significant and meaningful.

Dr. Connie

This is a major miss! How do I know this? The findings of my own research research on entrepreneurial learners and leaders repeatedly reveal one major finding – people are motivated by personal fulfillment and purpose.  People are guided by a sense of purpose in the workplace and when buying products and services.

Purpose shapes everything in leadership and life – from our buying decisions to the ways in which we interact with colleagues and take care of ourselves. Research continues to demonstrate that people live longer, happier and healthier lives when they have a purpose.

-Dr. Connie

Last week, I delivered a two-hour, online workshop for a government agency that is preparing its leaders for life after COVID, including the conflicts they might face in the workplace if people return to physical offices. We explored how conflict can be both counterproductive and productive. We also explored what they need to prepare for in 2021 – because change will continue to keep happening throughout the year.

The purpose of conflict was explored throughout the session. We also shared tools leaders and supervisors can use to help navigate the unchartered waters of 2021. More on that in a future post!

While coaching and teaching, I have noticed that thinking too far into the future is really challenging for leaders right now. Instead – my clients are focusing on 2021.

One of my coaching questions for clients lately has been this: Where do you want to be at the end of 2021?

It is not totally necessary for leaders to have only a long-term vision right now. Rather, many of them want to focus on the present as they create their future with intention and purpose, which is a fantastic step forward.

“Where” is the first step in the WILD Method of Strategic Foresight and Leadership. Download and use the Future Story 2021 strategic foresight coaching tool to help guide yourself and your teams through this important first step in creating a Purposeful Future.

Leading Innovative Teams: Creating Collaboration in Times of Change and Challenge

Mental health and overall well-being are essential to thriving families, businesses, communities and organizations. It has been both an honor and a pleasure to research, explore and learn more about the incredible field of mental health with administrators and faculty leading the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Leadership Institute. This two-year journey provided me with new tools and techniques, which I now use in my practice. I also shared new ideas and exercises, which they use in their work. Best of all? This wonderful gift provided me with new perspectives related to the intersections between mental health, leadership development, mindfulness and coaching. The learner in me was so jazzed when discovering these connections. Bonus! This partnership also provided me with access to cutting edge research and applications that I now use to support my clients!

Leading Innovation in 2020 and Beyond

One of the areas our team has been focused on is leading innovation. The monumental wildcard of COVID has forced universities, as well as every other sector of business, to change. This requires both bold leadership and the capacity to collaborate in innovative ways that can help us create a purposeful future that may be totally different than where we were heading before 2020.

The Mind Body Connection

For the past year, I have had the good fortune of working with faculty who focus on mental health. Dr. Matthew Wappett is the Executive Director of the Utah State University Center for Persons with Disabilities (UCEDD) – also known as the “Laughter Doctor :). Dr. Ty Aller is a Senior Program Coordinator for for UCEDD. They are both part of a team focused on growing the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Leadership Institute.

I loved one of the recent Instagram posts because it clearly demonstrates the connections between our minds and our bodies. Mental health transforms our physical health. About fifteen years ago, I read The Biology of Belief by Dr. Bruce Lipton. His book was my first introduction to the field of epigenetics. I studied genetics in graduate school but never heard of the word epigenetics until I found his work. Dr. Lipton began is career as cell biologist. His research around the mind-body-health connection is truly remarkable and is worth reading/watching/listening to if you are interested in how your thoughts transform your body and your life. I like to use his work in my personal life but also for my clients because thoughts are so powerful!

Working with prolific leaders who focus on mental health has enabled me to learn from experts who helped me refine my own tools, ideas and thoughts. And, I have been able to share my knowledge with them too -what a blast! Follow the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities National Training Center if you would like to learn more about their work or if you are interested in improving mental health:

Webinars in October!

I am co-teaching webinars with Drs. Wappett and Aller in October. The schedule is below. I will share more details about both webinars in the next few weeks. I also wanted to share some of the content their organizations create to help all of you understand and improve your own mental health.

My role in the project has been focused on developing content and tools designed to help coach mental health leaders and professionals with a focus on innovation and the future. Why? Like many professions, COVID has been a huge wildcard for mental health researchers and practitioners. Their work is more important than ever but the ways in which they collaborate, share, train, coach and assist others has changed and will continue to evolve. They are creating next generation mental health innovations, which is super exciting!!

Zoom fatigue and burnout are real things, so I promise to add a little activity and fun to the mix! Mark you calendars and register for the remaining webinars by going by clicking on the image below. I look “forward” to seeing some of you there!
